COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, April 27 (UPI) -- A train slammed into a bus at a railroad crossing in Sri Lanka Wednesday morning, killing more than 50 people and injuring at least 40 others.
The bus was reportedly packed with passengers when it was hit by the express train near the town of Polgahawela, about 50 miles northeast of the capital, Colombo, the BBC reported. The bus burst into flames upon impact.
The injured were taken to hospitals, and rescue workers were still trying to reach the burned remains of the dead.
There were no reported casualties among those on the train.
The driver of the bus is already being blamed for the accident. According to local police, he ignored signals warning that a train was approaching and tried to cross the track before the train passed.
