WASHINGTON, April 18 (UPI) -- Rep. Henry Hyde, R-Ill., announced Monday he will retire at the end of his term in 2006 after 31 years in office.

Best known for running the House impeachment proceedings against President Bill Clinton, the conservative Republican made the announcement on his Website, coinciding with his 81st birthday.

Currently chairman of the House International Relations Committee, he has been a long advocate of restricting federal abortion funding, for Christian political causes, and is known for bringing federal dollars to his Bensenville district, near O'Hare International Airport in Chicago.

He was first elected to the lower house of Congress in 1974.
