On Friday Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee said the minute a subpoena was issued by Senator Mike Enzi for Terri Shiavo to appear before his committee it became a crime to remove the feeding tube used to provide her with food and water. Says Frist, “Federal criminal law protects witnesses called before official congressional committee proceedings from anyone who may obstruct or impede a witness. Anyone who violates this law is subject to criminal fines and imprisonment.” Has judge Greer opened himself to prosecution? Georgetown University law professor Paul Rothstein says, “I think Judge Greer is making a legal mistake and is vulnerable. Provided that Congress is making legitimate investigations for making law, they have the power to seek evidence.”
