(CNSNews.com) - Sen. Joseph Lieberman, Al Gore's running mate in the 2000 presidential election, said he was caught "completely offguard" by Gore's decision to endorse presidential hopeful Howard Dean.
Speaking on NBC's Today show on Tuesday, Lieberman saved most of his criticism for Dean, however.
"Al Gore is endorsing somebody who has taken positions in this campaign that are diametrically opposite to what Al himself has said he believed in over the years: strong on defense, for tax cuts and against walls of protectionism that take away jobs."
Lieberman said what really bothers him is that Gore is supporting someone who is "fundamentally opposed to the basic transformation that Bill Clinton brought to this party in 1992...So Al Gore has to explain why he's endorsing somebody who I think will take our party and our country backward."
Lieberman said he is more determined than ever "to fight for what I believe is right for my party and my country."
He refused to comment on Al Gore's loyalty, saying only that he will always be grateful to Gore for choosing him as Gore's running mate in the 2000 election.
Craig Smith, Joe Lieberman's campaign manager, told Fox News Tuesday morning that Gore did not call Lieberman to tell him that he planned to endorse Dean.
"The first we heard about it was when we saw it on the news," Smith, said, "and well, you know, we took [Gore's] name off the short list for vice president."
Joking aside, Smith said Gore's endorsement of Dean doesn't change the playng field that much.
"At the end of the day, it's not Washington insiders, and it's not pundits, and it's not politicians that get to pick the Democratic nominee. It's the voters," he said, noting that in 54 days, the voters in N.H. will get to have their say - and so on through the primary season..
"You know, I worked for Bill Clinton in 1991, and at this point, the pundits and the polls were all showing that Bill Clinton couldn't get elected president," Smith said.
