Senate holds up border protection By: John Russell | Source: IRN NEWS December 27, 2004 8:04PM EST
Though it was first proposed in 1996 a border fence that would secure the nation’s southern border is being blocked in the Senate. The planned barrier would consist of two fences with a 150-foot corridor that would contain a road for use by the Border Patrol. A 14-mile fence made up of scrap metal along Mexican border proved to be a valuable tool in fighting both the influx of illegal aliens and drug trafficking. While the proposal was passed in the House last fall it remains stalled in the Senate. The Senate leadership is claiming that pressure from radical environmentalists is holding up progress on the plan that would help secure the country against crime and possible terrorist activity. - Border Patrol grabs 1.15 million illegals in '04 - Border Patrol wants second fence in Ariz. - Criminals, jihadists threaten U.S. border - Iraq Will Close its Borders and Restrict Movements for 3 Days
