Group: NAACP Turns Blind Eye to Abortion

"It's astonishing that the NAACP turns a blind eye to the greatest threat facing the nation's African-American community," said American Life League president Judie Brown.

"But considering the political correctness that has overcome this once great organization, it isn't so surprising after all. You see, the number one killer of black Americans is abortion. Babies are dying, yet the NAACP leadership stubbornly affirms its so-called pro-choice stance."

Fr. Jim Goode, OFM, president of the National Black Catholic Apostolate for Life, has pointed out that "there are nearly 1,200 African-American babies killed by abortion in America every day. Approximately 35 percent of all abortions in America are performed on black women, while they represent only 13 percent of the female population of the country."

The number of black babies killed by surgical abortion exceeds 400,000 annually.

Pastor Clenard Childress of LEARN, the Life Education and Resources Network, summed it up quite plainly on his group's pro-life Web site, BlackGenocide.org: "Frustration does not adequately describe my feelings about the misplaced priorities of the NAACP."

"Fr. Goode's organization and Pastor Childress's group are speaking out," said Brown. "But where is the NAACP, which prides itself as taking the lead in fighting attacks on the African American community? Black babies are dying every day, yet this group says nothing. Where is the bold leadership that made the NAACP a force to be reckoned with during the civil rights struggles of the '60s?"

As it searches for a replacement for departing president Kweisi Mfume, Brown said the NAACP "has a chance to reverse this 'black genocide.' The NAACP made its mark by challenging the status quo; and frankly, today the abortion culture is the status quo. It's time for the NAACP's leaders to rediscover the boldness of the civil rights era. The NAACP paved the way for an end to segregation. With prophetic leadership, it can now help end abortion."
