Few remember that before Adolph Hitler came to power the foundation of what was to be the wholesale slaughter of human beings considered unworthy to live was begun, not by politicians but, by the Bavarian Medical Society. It was German doctors who first decided that it would be better to euthanize those who treatment was considered too great a burden to society. Now, as the people of the Netherlands debate whether those who are considered medically hopeless should be put to death against their will a terrible secret is coming to light. Though it’s illegal, the practice of killing infants born prematurely or suffering from conditions considered life threatening is common and routinely carried out by physicians. And while taking the lives of young children is illegal in the Netherlands no charges have ever been brought against a doctor in that country for the practice.
