The scandal surrounding the UN’s Oil for Food program has grown significantly with the revelation that officials in the governments of France, Russia and China accepted pay offs for resisting US policy toward Iraq in the UN. Bribes to French officials and individuals of influence alone came to $1.78 billion dollars. In total $10.9 billion dollars that were to be used to ease the suffering of the Iraqi people were diverted to arms purchases and now it appears to foreign interests whose activities may help to explain their government’s resistance to the enforcement of sanctions and subsequent military action in Iraq. The Russian government has announced that it wants an independent probe into accusations of bribery in connection with its officials.
