Enemies of equal protection and free speech try stealth attack By: John Russell | Source: IRN NEWS September 21, 2004 6:07PM EST
There is an attempt to sneak two pieces of legislation generally opposed by most Americans using the Department of Defense Authorization bill. The first is the so-called hate crimes bill which is nothing but an attempt to silence opposition to homosexuality over the airwaves and from the nation’s pulpits and give special victims status to selected groups. The addition to the DOD authorization Bill was made by Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR). The other stealth legislation in the bill is a misnamed Fairness Doctrine that would only effect Armed Forces broadcasting. This attack on this first amendment was slipped in by Tom Harkin (D-IA) to silence conservative programming favored by an overwhelming number of those serving in the military. Any effort to protest the inclusion of these unpopular laws will have to be done before the deadline of September 30th less than 10 days away.
