Northeast
While one front continues to head east and offshore, another front will sweep across the Northeast from the west today. This second front will usher in cooler air across areas well inland. It will also help to keep some wet weather across the region. It may actually be cold enough for some wet snow to mix in with the showers today across western Pennsylvania and western New York. Highs will range from the 40s across the eastern Great Lakes to the 60s along the I-95 corridor from Boston to Washington, D.C. High pressure will build in Wednesday with drier weather expected.
Midwest
Cool weather will dominate across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley today, while temperatures soar above average with ample sunshine across the Plains. A northwesterly flow behind a cold front will be responsible for highs only in the 40s this afternoon across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. A few rain and snow showers may even fall across the eastern Great Lakes. Meanwhile, a strong southwesterly flow out ahead of a disturbance dropping into the Rockies will send readings into the 70s and 80s across the Great Plains. This warmer air will continue heading eastward over time and readings will actually rise overnight across the mid-Mississippi Valley and Upper Midwest.
South
High pressure will result in a generally quiet day across the South with ample sunshine. One exception will be across the central and southern portions of the Florida Peninsula as the tail end of a cold front brings some wet weather to the region. Parts of the Southeast will be a bit cooler than average for late April as a northwesterly flow impacts the region. Highs will be in the 60s across Tennessee and western North Carolina.
West
The ridge of high pressure responsible for more than sixty record highs Monday (including some April records) will begin to weaken today. This will result in some cooler weather, although many areas will still experience warmth well above average for late April. It will be noticeably cooler across the Pacific Northwest where a potent disturbance will kick up the winds and bring in some unsettled weather, especially later today. Highs will soar into the 80s over much of the Great Basin, and into 90s across the deserts of the Southwest. Southern California will also have another very warm day, although areas along the coast will experience more of a sea breeze this afternoon. A more widespread cool-down is in store for the West Wednesday, and that will bring an end to the record heat.
