Judiciary Committee passes Mukasey By: John Russell | Source: IRN News November 6, 2007 2:13PM EST
In an 11 to 8 vote the Senate Judiciary Committee has approved the nomination of Michael Mukasey to assume the office of attorney general. The vote almost certainly assures that the President's pick to replace Alberto Gonzales will get a positive vote from the full senate. Monentum swung to Mukasey's favor after he garnered the votes of Democrats Charles Schumer of New York and Diane Feinstein of California. Opposition to the White House's choice centered around Mukasey's failure to clearly define whether he believed that the interrogation technique known as "waterboarding" constituted torture. It's expected that the final vote will occur by the end of the week. - House Passes Tax Rise on Hedge-Fund, Buyout Managers
