There are plans being discussed about building a security fence around the nation’s capitol. Washington’s police chief Terrance W. Gainer says the project would run between $15 to $50 million dollars. Colorado’s Republican senator, Ben Nighthorse Campbell says, “Most Americans would rebel at the idea of their capitol being fenced off…. It flies in the face of what Americans think.” Noting that the congress was told that a series of barriers and other security measures would be enough to meet any legitimate security concerns, ranking Democrat Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois says, “I, for one, hope we don’t turn to a security fence.” If the fence is built it will be the first time in the country’s history that Washington’s leaders have been walled off from the rest of the America.
