Yassin, who had previously been convicted of ordering the kidnapping and killing of two soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces, was freed from an Israeli prison in 1997 as part of a prisoner exchange with Jordan. The Jordanians released two agents from the Israeli intelligence service Mossad, who had been arrested in the failed assassination attempt against Khaled Mashal, at the time the political leader of Hamas.
