Poll shows most against same-sex marriage

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In Boston today, The Coalition for Marriage, of which Family Research Council is a member, released a new poll conducted by Zogby International which shows that a majority of Massachusetts residents oppose the recent court decision mandating same-sex "marriage," and they believe that only marriage between one man and one woman should be legally recognized.

Additionally, National Public Radio is readying the release of a new poll which will show that if President Bush stands firm in the defense of marriage and he is matched against a Democratic opponent who favors civil unions, the President will enjoy a sharp increase in support.

"These polls show that despite favorable media coverage for same-sex 'marriage' and the Left's political correctness campaign, Americans know what the definition of marriage is, and they want it protected," said FRC President Tony Perkins.

"The people of Massachusetts do not agree with the radical agenda thrust on them by the Supreme Judicial Court there, and they are turning to a constitutional amendment in order to save marriage in their state. Similarly, every recent national poll has proven that a majority of Americans are worried about the state of marriage in America, and a majority in our nation now support a federal marriage amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

"President Bush must use his upcoming State of the Union Address to clarify his support for a federal marriage amendment. Doing so would not only enhance the amendment's chances for success, but it would also garner the President greater support among the American public, which is increasingly supportive of efforts to protect marriage," said Perkins.
